Pinewood Derby

Pinewood Derby

This year's Pinewood Derby will be on Saturday January 27, 2018, at the First Church of the Nazarene, right near the Shadwell intersection of Route 250 and Routes 22 / 231. (see Google Street View)

Check-in starts at 10am.  Race starts at 11am.

All registered boys should have received a car kit at the December Pack meeting.  If you did not receive one, please see your Den leader or the Cubmaster.

Awards Categories:
This year we will have awards in the following categories:
- Overall speed winners -- First Place, Second Place, Third Place.
- Den winners -- the fastest car in each den.
- Turtle award -- the slowest car to cross the finish line, intentional or not.
- Good Sportsmanship Award -- to the Cub Scout who demonstrates exceptional sportsmanship.
- Cubs Choice -- all boys will vote on their favorite car.

We will also have exhibition race classes (no awards, other than bragging rights) for:
- Siblings and Friends cars -- any sibling or friend can get their own car kit ($4.50 per kit) and build their own to race.
- Parents cars -- adults can join the fun too! (same $4.50 per car kit)
- Outlaw Class -- Break the rules  to create a car that goes above and beyond. Rules below.
(no kit necessary - build your own - but a suggested donation of $10)

Rules:
We use pretty standard BSA rules for Pinewood Derby races.  Please see the Rules document below, which covers the specs for the car, including size, as well as rules for preparation, modification, and race day.

Outlaw Class rules.pdf - amendments for those entering the Outlaw Class.

Car Templates:
There are many templates that Cubs can use for the design of their car, or they can come up with any other design that they wish, as long as it fits within the rules above.
Below are a few templates to help you get started.
